This kid of mine. He kills me. I'm sure every mother thinks it, but he's got to be the funniest kid on earth. I just finished putting him down for a late nap. We had company, so he stayed awake too long, and it was difficult getting him to settle down. Plus, he's developed an amazing repertoire of nap delay tactics.
First of all, he no longer lets me rock him. He's made that connection, and he realizes it puts him to sleep too quickly. Secondly, he spits out his paci, because that puts him to sleep pretty quickly too.
But the third thing is the best move he's got, and it's the one I love. He turns on the charm. Do you know how difficult it is to make a baby take a nap when he's talking so sweetly and blowing you kisses??
Just now, he did all of the above. He kept popping up and throwing his paci across the bed. Then we'd talk. Izzy: "Da na zee bow ip?" Mommy, "I know. That cracks me up too." Then he'd smile his most precious smile at me, and to bring it all home, he'd make a face. I'm telling you, this kid is the next Jim Carrey. Sometimes he would just roll his eyes and squinch up his mouth, sometimes he would look quickly from side to side while holding his mouth limp, but the one that really got to me today was when he fluttered his eyes shut in an exaggerated sleeping face, while having his mouth fall open. This happens to be my preferred sleeping position.
I cracked up, then said, "I sure do love you, bubby." He smiled sweetly up to me and then plopped a big kiss on my forehead. This kid of mine.
