Never in a million years did I EVER dream that a cartoon geared towards preschoolers could make me cry. But it did and I loved every minute of it.
Ever since our families heard that Izzy's girlfriend, Dora, was coming to town, everyone kept asking us if we were going. But when we heard that tickets started at $16, and ran to $38, with a kids ticket costing the same, we balked at paying that much for something that we didn't think Izzy would appreciate. That meant my sisters and my sister's husband, Johnny, all got their fingers dialing, trying to win tickets so little man could go.
Then this Monday, two days ago, my youngest sister, Crystal, called and said, "Who's the best damn sister in the world? And you better answer this right!!"
"Well," I jokingly replied, "This is a tough one because one sister just cussed me out while the other one is over here helping me clean up the Florida room!"
"True," she said, "But this one just won you five tickets to see Dora tomorrow night!!"
So last night we loaded up Crystal, me, Chris, Izzy, and my niece Maddie and we all went to see Dora. And she won great seats - they were the $28 seats, which put us about five rows back. The whole show was very cute, but what made it for all of us was the wondrous expression on Izzy's face when Dora came out singing and dancing. She was a real woman, without a costume, although she was dressed the same as Dora, and she was small and rather squarely built, with short, straight black hair like Dora. But she looked enough like a child cartoon character to fool Izzy and apparently a thousand other screaming preschoolers.
They gave us little flags when we got there, and he waved his wildly, he danced, he clapped, he kept screaming out his beloved's name: "Dora!" And I did tear up. It's powerfully emotional to see your child experiencing a dream come true. Even if it wasn't ever a dream he could of thought up himself yet. But he was enthralled for the whole show.
I am so lucky to have family who want to make my son happy every bit as much as I do. Last night was so much fun, and there were at least three people that I know of who tried their best to make sure Izzy got to go. Thanks guys, and especially thanks to you, Crystal, who actually got through!!! Although I'm sure Izzy's memory of the show is already fading, Chris and I will never forget Dora's Pirate Adventure. Or at least the look on our sweet Izzy's face.
